FOREST CITY | Members of Forest City High School’s advanced composition class visited the senior citizens they have been emailing, as part of their email project, at the Good Samaritan Center on Monday, Feb. 18.

Advanced composition class instructor Scott Bertelsen said in this project, his students would send a letter every two weeks. Then one of the activities people at the Good Samaritan would then interview the person at the center and send back a response.

“This gave my advanced comp people a chance not only to do a different form of writing from essay writing, but, I guess I always say, it bridges the gap between the elderly and the young,” Bertelsen said. “I always find that they actually have much more in common than they think they do.”

During their Good Samaritan visit, the students have the opportunity to meet the person they have been emailing. Three of the four students in the class came Monday to meet their pen pals.

Bertelsen said the project is mandatory for the advanced composition students and the people who work at Good Samaritan will always find a person to pair up with one of his students.

“I hope that…they will establish long-term relationships; it has in some cases,” Bertelsen said.
