As Forest City High School English teacher Scott Bertelsen reached the end of this high school teaching career, he has received a special honor - the Distinguished Alumni Award from North Iowa Area Community College.
Bertelsen was nominated by Tony Coloff.
The Outstanding Alumni Award recipient was given to Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals.
Bertelsen attended NIACC from 1977 to 1979 to complete his general education requirements, receiving his associate’s degree in art. He then transferred to the University of Northern Iowa where he earned his bachelor’s degree in English.

NIACC was a good fit for him at the time economically, academically and socially, Bertelsen said.
Last fall, Bertelsen was inducted in the Iowa High School Speech Association Hall of Fame, which was something he had always wanted.
Bertelsen said the distinguished alumni award was a nice gift and when asked where he goes to school he said doesn’t usually mention NIACC.
“It’s nothing personal, I just don’t think about it,” he said. “But this really made me realize how I was. I felt I really received a very well-rounded education there. I think very highly of NIACC in many ways as a community college.”
