FOREST CITY | The Forest City Police Department's K9 Kona has been awarded a Healthcare for K9 Heroes Grant.
These grants from the Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., help law enforcement agencies pay annual health insurance premiums for their working dogs.
Kona, a German shepherd, joined the FCPD in late 2014.
Since 2016, the Massachusetts-based charity has donated almost $50,000 towards medical reimbursement programs for self-funded K9 units that previously received a bullet and stab-proof protective vest from the organization.
Kona received his vest from Vested Interest in K9s several years ago.
The annual medical reimbursement insurance policy is administered by Trupanion, a leader in medical insurance for cats and dogs.
Trupanion offers injury and illnesses coverage for working and service dogs.
Coverage includes illnesses, injuries -- including those sustained in the line of duty -- diagnostic testing and therapies.
