When the West Hancock High School baseball team kicked off its season, seniors Gavin Becker and Caleb Eckels said the team needed to focused on winning games and doing better than they did last year.
Becker, who plays centerfield, and Eckels, who plays second base, both said the team needs to do better than last year and needs to work harder on the basics and mental game to do that.
Becker said the team goal is to basically improve a lot.
“Last year was kind of a rough year, so we set a goal to be better this year,” he said.

To accomplish this, coming to practice and games with the mindset of winning games rather than not losing by a lot will help the team improve upon itself, Becker said.
Eckels said the team also needs to work on the fundamentals, like making contact with the ball, fielding cleanly, making good throws and pitching strikes.
“So far we’re in a better spot than we were last year, so that’s good,” he said. “Just keep building on the pretty good [season] that we’ve had so far. Working on the bat and have a better season.”
One of the challenges the team has faced this year is not having a whole lot of pitchers, but the most important thing for the team this year it to focus and have the confidence, they said.
