The following area athletes, from Forest City High School and West Hancock High School, qualified for the state track and field meet, which takes place from Thursday, May 16 to Saturday, May 18, at Drake University in Des Moines. 

Forest City


Senior Kelsey Koch is seeded third at state, after qualifying with a 100 meter hurdles time of 15.59. Koch also received the go-ahead in the long jump, as she jumped 15-11.50, good for 21st in the state. 

The Indians also qualified, and are seeded 14th, in the 4x400 meter relay, with a qualifying time of 4:12.96. In the 4x800 meter relay, Forest City is 19th, at 10:14.40.

In the girls high jump, freshman Shae Dillavou is going to the big dance, with a mark of 4-10.00. 

Finally, the Indians qualified in the distance medley, as the team ran a 4:29.29, good for a 15th seeding. 


Senior Jordan Spooner qualified for state in the 400 meter hurdles, running a 56.97, to earn the No. 12 seed. Elijiah Weaver jumped 6-01.00 in the high jump, good for a trip to the dance, and ranking him No. 21 in 2A. Senior Seth Brock will be seeded No. 19 at state, after a mark of 20-05.50 in the long jump. 

The Indians qualified for two events on the team side. Forest City is seeded No. 23 in the 4x400 meter relay, with a time of 3:33.21, and No. 24 in the 4x800, at 8:39.95.

West Hancock

The West Hancock girls team qualified for the state meet in four events, with three individuals and one relay team making the trek to Des Moines. 

Freshman Kennedy Kelly ran a qualifying time of 1:10.17. in the 400 meter hurdles, which will send her to state with the No. 12 seed in 1A. In the shot put, Amanda Chizek will have the No. 4 seed, after she tossed the rock 39 feet, to qualify. Junior Emily Ryerson is seeded No. 9 overall in the 100 meter hurdles. She qualified with a time of 16.39.

The Eagles sent their 4x100 meter shuttle hurdle to state, with the No. 6 seed. The four-girl squad of Rachel Leerar, Riley Hiscocks, Shae Smith, and Grace Rosin qualified with a time of 1:09.42.


The Eagles send five boys events to the state meet. Junior Josef Smith qualified in three separate events. Smith ran  the 110 meter hurdles in 15.51 seconds, good for a No. 9 seed. Smith is seeded No. 14 in the 400 meter hurdles, with his time of 57.72, and No. 14 in the long jump, with a distance of 20-02.00.

Junior Chandler Redenius qualified in the shot put, with a distance of 45-10.00. 

The Eagles are also sending their 4x100 meter relay team to state, after the squad qualified with a time of 45.68. That time is good for a No. 23 seed.
