BRITT | For three years in a row, the West Hancock boys basketball team was one of the best in Class 1A as it made three straight trips to the state tournament.

This year things in Britt may shift a little as almost all over those faces have graduated. For the Eagles to maintain its high standard, some young and inexperienced guys will have to step up.

“We are looking for a bunch of guys to step up their game after losing 90 percent of all statistical categories from last year,” West Hancock coach Brian Peterson said. “We will be better toward the end of the year when we figure some things out.”

The Eagles return four letterwinners in Chase Eisenman, MaCoy Yeakel, Gavin Becker and Lucas Weiland. Weiland missed all of last season with a knee injury, though. Eisenman and Yeakel are the top returning scorers from that bunch, as each averaged just over four points per game.

After that, it’s up to a host of sophomores, including Josef Smith, Tristan Hunt, Brayden Leerar, and Brody Cox, to help alleviate some of the stress.

In a conference which features Forest City and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, both of whom have loads back from last year’s talented teams, competing in the Top of Iowa Conference West Division is a tall order. How quickly the Eagles can get up to speed will likely determine their fate this year.
