BRITT | The annual awards night for West Hancock High School girls basketball was recently held.
The following are a few comments from West Hancock head coach Paul Sonius about this year's basketball season.
“This was an incredible year with the way we moved through regionals to get to State,” said Sonius. “The game against Montezuma was a classic as the game was never more than five points differential, but it came down to our defense and inside play of Amanda Chizek.”
Chizek has already broken two career records for West Hancock with 217 blocks and 818 rebounds. Sonius said Rachel Leerar looks ready to obliterate our scoring record as she has 1,046 points as a sophomore.
The team tied a school record with 25 wins and went undefeated in the TOI West division, 16-0.
“Having everybody back with a young squad behind only going to get better with another summer under their belts will help us try to win the conference again and make state,” Sonius said. “We will be looking to continue to become stronger and work on our games this summer as the season and especially end of the year play by Mahayla Faust, Maddie Eisenman, Riley Hiscocks and Kennedy Kelly during playoffs and state make us a team with a lot of weapons.”
Sonius said the end-of-the-year banquet was really focused on what each girl meant to the success of this team and “how we aren't only a one to two person team as everybody including the reserves played a huge part in our success.”
