BRITT | Motorists will no longer be able to drive on a portion of Hancock County Road R35 between Britt and Kanawha.
On Wednesday, March 13, the Hancock County Road Department issued an electronic notification stating County Road R35 from 170th Street to Kanawha is closed until further notice. Motorists will have to take the designated detour.
The portion of the road was left as “modified subbase” last fall after numerous rain events in the spring and summer prevented Flynn Company Inc. from completing the nearly 9.7-mile, $5.4 million reconstruction project that began in June. The project was scheduled to be complete in mid-October.
Flynn Company completed paving, shouldering and painting from 220th Street to 170th Street, or County Road B55, and its crew will return in the spring to complete paving from 170th Street to Kanawha when the weather allows.

Since Flynn Company surpassed its allotted work days for the project, it was charged $2,000 in liquidated damages for each “good-weather” day — Monday through Friday — until the shouldering and painting was completed last fall, and again, until the paving is finished this spring.
