WODEN - For Robin Wubben, Thanksgiving is all about the desserts.
"My favorite part is the desserts. We've got a nice variety this year," she said during Thursday's Thanksgiving meal at Wubben's Bar and Grill in Woden. "I've got my eye on that coconut cream pie."
That pie was brought in by a local resident to share during the community meal. Wubben's provided the turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes and the rest of the trimmings.
This is the 10th year Robin and Bruce Wubben have opened their business for the Thanksgiving dinner. Robin Wubben said she enjoys offering a place for community members to gather for the holiday.
"People just appreciate it. Especially weather-wise, if their kids or family can't come. We're here for them," she said.
Cy Sundquist, of Leland, was one area resident who liked having a second Thanksgiving option.
"I had two turkeys ready to cook, but the roads were so bad, no kids could come up," he said.
He was invited to the meal by Glen Pannkuk, of Forest City. Pannkuk also appreciated having a full meal on Thursday.
"My wife was sick, so this worked out well," he said.
This was Pannkuk's first year at the community Thanksgiving. For others, the annual dinner has become a tradition.
"We've done this for several years," Becky Crone, of Woden, said as she unwrapped a hot dish. "It's a good thing to do if you don't have a lot of family coming."
She was eating with her mom, Dixie Buns, of Woden.
"It's someplace to go and eat out for Thanksgiving," Buns said.
"And you don't have to cook the turkey," Crone added.
Or clean up.
"There's no left-overs and no dishes," Veronica Maas, of Crystal Lake, said. "You only have to cook a couple of things."
The rest of the cooking, and dishes, was done by the Wubbens. And their family.
"Two out of our three girls are here. They get to help. We do the prep work, they can do the clean up," Robin Wubben said.
"There's a few more dishes to do, but we all work together so it's not too bad," Stacie Meinders said.
While a lot goes into preparing for the community meal, she enjoys getting to spend the holiday with her mom and dad.
