GARNER | The Hancock County Board of Supervisors will have some big shoes to fill when two county employees retire early next year.

That’s what Sis Greiman, Hancock County Board chairwoman, said after the supervisors’ Monday, Dec. 4, meeting, when multiple payroll changes were discussed.

“It’ll be amazing to find someone like you had,” she said. “Well, you don’t find anyone like you had, but you find someone else (who can do the work).”

Pat Gorman, the county’s longtime maintenance supervisor, submitted his resignation this month. He is slated to retire in January.

Gorman, who has worked for the county for 28 years, is responsible for maintenance of the courthouse, public safety center, community health, veterans affairs and conservation building as well as associated grounds and related facility needs.

Greiman said a committee was selected to hire Gorman’s successor.

On Monday, Dec. 11, the county board determined the hourly wage for the full-time position would be between $18.25 and $22 an hour and it'd be eligible for overtime wages when applicable.

Also retiring is Joyce Matern who has been a Hancock County dispatcher for at least 30 years. She will retire on Jan. 3.

“We wish Joyce nothing but the best and happiest retirement imaginable,” said Andy Buffington, Emergency Management coordinator for Hancock and Winnebago counties. “Hancock County will be losing more than 30 years of experience and she will be leaving with our gratitude for her dedication to public safety and emergency services communications. We will all miss seeing Joyce in the Communications Center.”

At the Dec. 11 meeting, the supervisors approved the hiring of Kevin Knebel, a Winnebago County dispatcher, to fill the vacancy in the Communication Center when Matern retires. He will start on Jan. 8.

Knebal is a retired Iowa State Patrol sergeant who has worked as a part-time dispatcher in Hancock County.

“I’m excited about the direction of the department right now,” Buffington said.
