BRITT | Hancock County Road R35 between Britt and Kanawha has reopened to motorists, according to a Hancock County Road Department notification sent Thursday, Nov. 29.
The $5.4 million project — reconstructing County Road R35 from south of 220th Avenue to north of Kanawha — began in June and was scheduled for completion in mid-October, but due to numerous rain events this spring and summer, the completion date had been delayed, and now, it’s ultimately been postponed until next spring.
Flynn Company Inc. will return in the spring of 2019 when weather allows the crew to complete paving.
Of the nearly 9.7-mile reconstruction project, the contractor has completed paving, shouldering and painting from 220th Street to 170th Street, or County Road B55. The south half is “a modified subbase and will not ride like a gravel road.”
“Please use caution from 170th Street to Kanawha,” the notification said.
Since Flynn Company has surpassed its allotted work days for the project, it was charged $2,000 in liquidated damages for each “good-weather” day — Monday through Friday — until the shouldering and painting was completed this fall, and again, until the paving is finished next spring.
The Hancock County Secondary Roads department will plow the road this winter but won’t treat the new concrete with salt or sand.
