Jaci Smith, a 25-year newspaper veteran, has been named editor of the North Iowa Media Group, which includes the Globe Gazette. She replaces David Mayberry who resigned his position. Friday, March 29 was Mayberry’s last day.
Smith will oversee news gathering operations of the Globe Gazette and its two weekly affiliates, the Summit-Tribune and Mitchell County Press News.
Smith comes to Mason City from Delaware, where she served as digital planning editor for The News Journal, and its award-winning website, DelawareOnline.com. She returns to Lee Enterprises, North Iowa Media Group owner, after 25 years, having started her career as a copy editor at the Racine, Wisconsin, Journal-Times. In between, she has worked as a reporter and newsroom leader at publications in Minnesota, California and New Jersey.
“Jaci is an experienced, accomplished journalist and newsroom leader,” said Globe Gazette Publisher Sam Gett. “I hired her in 2007 when I worked in Northfield, Minnesota, and am excited to work with Jaci again.”
Smith is moving to Mason City with her husband, Jerry. The Smiths have two adult sons who live in southern Minnesota.
"I am really happy about being back in the Midwest and am eager to begin learning all about Mason City and its residents," Smith said. "I look forward to building on the momentum the Globe Gazette has gained under David's leadership."
Gett thanked Mayberry for his contributions to the Globe. “I enjoyed working with David and wish him well in his future endeavors,” he said.
