Jamie Giellis is one step closer to being the new mayor of Denver following the outcome of the mayoral election held on Tuesday, May 7.

Giellis garnered 27 percent of the vote while incumbent mayor, Michael Hancock received 40 percent.

To be declared the winner, a candidate needed to receive 50 percent of the votes, plus one.

Gielllis told the Denver Post, “The people of Denver have spoken. They have sent a clear message that they are done with the direction this city is headed under the current mayor, Michael Hancock. And let me just say, I am ready for the fight, ready for the fight."

The two will face off again in a special election scheduled for June 4.
