HANCOCK COUNTY – The Physical Therapist of Hancock County Health System (HCHS) have a new tool in their arsenal to fight common diagnosis such as tennis elbow, shin splints and even carpal tunnel - Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTM).
The SASTM Program allows HCHS providers to incorporate biomechanics testing, flexibility/strength training and SASTM treatments, which utilizes instruments designed for treatment of soft tissue disorders, along with education to enhance and improve fitness results.
It is theorized that SASTM is effective because the instruments effectively break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue. The ergonomic design of these instruments provides the clinician with the ability to locate restrictions through sound waves. This allows the clinician to treat the affected area with the appropriate amount of pressure and adhesions within the soft tissue which may have developed as a result of surgery, immobilization, repeated strain or other mechanisms, are broken down allowing full functional restoration to occur.
Common Treatable Diagnosis that can be treated using SASTM include: tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, shin splints, ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel, trigger finger and hamstring injury.
