Dean Snyder's DeFord named top Safety Professional
Dean Snyder Construction’s Field Safety Coordinator Russ DeFord was named the Safety Professional of the Year. He received the award Feb. 28 at the annual Master Builders of Iowa winter conference.
DeFord has been with Clear Lake-based DSC since 1993 and has been the field safety coordinator since 2008.
Dean Snyder Construction was also recognized as a finalist for the Leadership in Workforce Recruitment award at the conference.
NIACC hosts Start Smart Workshop

Henkel receives top Workforce Recruitment Award
Henkel Construction Company was named the 2017 recipient of the Leadership in Workforce Recruitment Award by the Master Builders of Iowa at the group's annual conference Feb. 28 in Altoona.
The award recognizes "the outstanding efforts of companies who are actively engaged in solving our industry’s labor shortage" by "communicating to future industry workers that there are incredible career opportunities in the commercial construction industry."
Clear Lake Chamber hosts financial literacy program

2 North Iowa nurses on the list of 100 Great Iowa Nurses
Two North Iowa nurses – Michelle Kingland and Douglas Meyers – are among the honorees in the 100 Great Iowa Nurses program, according to a release.
They were selected "based on their concern for humanity, their contribution to the community and to the nursing profession, their leadership and mentoring." A banquet is scheduled for May 6 in Des Moines.
Kingland works at Hospice of North Iowa in Forest City, while Meyers works for Mercy Medical Center–North Iowa in Clear Lake.
Hagen Robb earns Century 21 award
Julie Hagen Robb, broker associate with CENTURY 21 Preferred, earned the CENTURY 21 System's Centurion Producer Award for outstanding sales production in 2017. The award is given to sales associates who have 70 or more closed transaction sides within a calendar year.
Clark & Associates Real Estate hires Eastman
Clark & Associates Real Estate in Clear Lake announced the addition of Sales Associate Tami Eastman. She has served on several area civic boards in the past and currently serves on the board of the Garner Visual Improvement Program. Eastman lives in Garner and has two grown children in college.
Walmart supports talent contest in Clear Lake
Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association was a recipient of Walmart’s Community Grant program for Iowa Rocks Talent, a statewide competition for musicians under 21. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 11 at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. Other regional competitions will be held in Des Moines, Okoboji, and Dubuque, with the finals on Labor Day weekend at Arnolds Park.
IMT installs new laser cutting machine
Garner's Iowa Mold Tooling Co., Inc. announced the installation of a new laser cutting machine as part of an initiative to improve efficiency while putting the customer mission first. Officials said in a release the new machine will cut faster, is more cost efficient, requires less energy to operate, and will improve the plant's "ergonomics, visual management, and material handling strategies."
Wilkins receives President's Producer Award
Dodie Wilkins, owner/broker of CENTURY 21 Preferred, earned the CENTURY 21 System’s President’s Producer Award for outstanding sales production and commitment to quality service in 2017. The award is given to associates who earn the Centurion Award and the CENTURY 21 Quality Service Pinnacle Award in the same calendar year.
The CENTURION Producer award honors associates who have sales production of at least 70 closed units within a calendar year.
Wilkins also received the CENTURY 21 Quality Service Pinnacle Producer Award. The national award is presented to those who receive a minimum satisfaction rating on customer surveys.
NSB Bank promotes three
Kirk Paulson, president and CEO of NSB Bank in Mason City and Northwood, recently announced the promotion three employees.
Drew Gappa is the new vice president. Gappa, originally from Emmetsburg, started his banking career in 2008 and joined NSB Bank in April 2013 as a loan officer. He graduated from Northern Iowa.
Jillian McIntire is the new head of retail sales. McIntire graduated from Tripoli and attended Wartburg. She started her banking career in June 2007 as a part-time teller in NSB's Mason City office and has held three other positions with NSB.
Ginger Schwab is the new deposit specialist and teller supervisor. Schwab, who grew up in Crawford, Nebraska, earned an associates degree from Western Nebraska and is taking graduate online courses from Buena Vista.
IMT Group Names MBT Insurance Gem Agency
The IMT Group, a Midwest-based provider of personal and commercial insurance products, recently named Forest City-based MBT Insurance to its list of 2018 Gem Agencies. MBT was one of 84 agencies out of about 1,000 in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin to receive the award, which is based on rank, growth, loss ratio, and profitability.
Wells Fargo names Hackman to Leaders Club
Wells Fargo Home Mortgage recently named Mary Hackman, home mortgage consultant, to its 2017 Leaders Club for the 16th consecutive year. The award is based on exceeding sales and for providing outstanding customer service in 2017. Hackman has been with Wells Fargo for 20 years and has been in the financial services industry for 33 years.
TeamQuest Foundation awards three STEM grants
The TeamQuest Foundation recently announced its three grant recipients to support STEM programs in North Iowa: Project Lead the Way launch at Clear Creek Elementary School and Robotics Club ($14,250); Mason City Schools Robotics Club ($1,450); and NIACC's YES! Science Camp ($4,400). Applications for 2018 awards are due April 30.
Ozark National names Kruse top agent
Ozark National Life Insurance named Cathy Kruse, Marble Rock, its No. 1 agent for 2017. Kruse has ranked among the top five agents in her company for each of the past 25 years. She was honored at the company's recent annual convention in Nashville.
Mercy's maternity care receives quality award from Wellmark
Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield recognized Mercy Medical Center–North Iowa with a Blue Distinction Center+ designation for maternity care. The honor is part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program and measures patient safety and quality measures.
Community Kitchen recognizes volunteer, names board
Wally Reidel, Mason City, was recognized as the 2017 Community Kitchen Volunteer of the Year during the nonprofit's annual meeting. Reidel is a "faithful" who helps with the Kitchen’s meal preparation program, which served more than 54,100 meals in 2017.
Community Kitchen also announced its board members for 2018: Jessica Reith, president; Jan Faktor, vice president; Megan Studer, secretary-treasurer; and board members Linda Brunsvold, Rev. Kenneth Gehling, Lucy Tanner, Michelle Jurgens, Doug Waychus, and Jean Palmer (past president). Amanda Ragan remains executive director.
NIACC nursing program ranked No. 2 in Iowa
North Iowa Area Community College was named the No. 2 licensed practice nursing program in Iowa by PracticalNursing.org. The group ranks 11 of the the state's schools using first-time pass rates on the NCLEX-PN exam.
