MASON CITY — Standing Hampton will be the featured band headlining a free rock concert Friday night, Sept. 28, for the Up In Smoke BBQ Bash at the North Iowa Events Center.

The band captures the sound and magic from the glory days of classic rock, performing the best musical nuggets from the 1970s, ’80s and beyond, harnessing the energy and spectacle of rock at its best.

For more than 17 years, Standing Hampton has been entertaining classic rock fans across the Midwest, performing at festivals, town celebrations, casinos, special events and clubs, according to the group’s website.

In addition Standing Hampton has shared the stage with many national acts including Rick Springfield, Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, Night Ranger, Little River Band, April Wine, Head East, Firehouse and Janey Lane.

The BBQ Bash concert will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Standing Hampton takes the stage at 8 p.m.

Entertaining is at the heart of Standing Hampton’s mission.

The members are at their best when the audience is enjoying the show, said band member Doug Dixon.

“I like to say that it’s the band and the audience that builds the show,” Dixon said. “We try to get them involved early and often, jumping down off the stage and getting them to sing along with some of the songs.”

In addition to Dixon, band members are Tony Benson, Nancy Benson, Tommy Walker, Anthony Cravero and Gabe Brown.

The group is stacked with strong vocalists, including Nancy Benson and Brown, an "American Idol" contestant, giving them the range to tackle a wide variety of songs.

“They are going to see a fun look back at the ‘70s and ‘80s classic rock,” Dixon said. “There’s six of us, and we move right along with the material.”

Friday's entertainment opens with BJ Huffman, a Mason City-based musician and Webb City, Missouri native. He takes the stage at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday's lineup also features a North Iowa country singer.

Jesse Allen, 27, is a Marble Rock native and has been compared to Jason Aldeen and Luke Combs. His 1 p.m. show will be acoustic.
