Helping birds survive winter in your backyard

A male Downy Woodpecker, left, and a Black-capped Chickadee share a bird feeder.

Add some color to your life by feeding wintertime birds.

Mitchell County Conservation Board Naturalist Chelsea Ewen Rowcliffe will offer a free program on winter birding from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Milton R. Owen Nature Center, just west of Osage on Highway 9.

Learn about winter bird feeding, what species are visiting feeders, and how to attract the most birds to your yard. Participants will also make bird treats to take home.

People are asked to dress for the weather, as there will be a leisurely birding hike around the nature center.

Register by calling the nature center, 641-732-5204, to ensure there are enough supplies on hand.
