In my last weather tip I discussed the optical phenomenon known as sun dogs, however sun dogs are not the only optical phenomenon produced by the sun and clouds.
You may have heard of light pillars as well. This is when columns of light can be seen emanating from below or above a light source. It is produced by the reflection of the light off of ice crystals, whereas sun dogs are caused by refraction of light through ice crystals.
Light pillars can be produced from the sun or the moon.
