CLEAR LAKE — Get your Arctic Cat and Polaris snowmobiles ready to go.
And if you have an old snowmobile sitting in the garage, bring that along, too.
Saturday the Jack Helgren Memorial Snowmobile Race will take place at McIntosh State Park.
Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with racing expected to start around 10.
The race will be LeMans-style and consist of five classes based on age and horsepower of the machines. The purse is $5,000 and the entry fee is $30 per class.
“I don’t have a clue about the turnout,” said Kim Dwyer, who will announce the event. “But the DNR said they are expecting a large crowd.”
The event will also feature a vintage snowmobile show and swap meet. There is no entry fee and spectators are welcome. Concessions and restrooms will be provided but visitors may wish to bring their own seating.
“The Jack” is sponsored by the Iowa State Snowmobile Association in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Economic Development and several North Iowa area snowmobile clubs.
Dwyer said he is hoping this can become an annual event.
“People will be coming with vintage and current sleds,” he said. “You don’t have to invest a ton of money. I know there are a lot of people that haven’t had a sled out for 20 years that plan on running it.”
