Two from NIACC on baseball draft prospects list

MASON CITY | NIACC sophomores Brandon Williamson and Bryce Ball are ranked in Perfect Game's top 75 Junior College prospects list for the 2018 Major League Draft.

Williamson, a left-handed pitcher who has signed with Michigan State University, is ranked 18th on the list of 75 players.

Ball, a first baseman from Newman Catholic who has signed with Dallas Baptist University, is ranked 55th.

Williamson was 4-1 with one save with a 3.86 earned run average in 2017 in 49 innings pitched. Williamson had 45 strikeouts and 25 walks as a freshman.

Ball hit .419 for the Trojans during his freshman campaign and earned first-team all-NJCAA Region XI honors. He had 22 doubles with seven home runs, 52 RBIs and scored 49 runs.

Iowa Central stops NIACC in dual

MASON CITY | No. 10 Iowa Central topped No. 12 NIACC 38-6 in an ICCAC wrestling dual meet Wednesday night in the NIACC gym.

NIACC picked up wins from sophomore Ryan Faught (165) and Jimsher Sidhu (285).

Faught nipped the Tritons' Tyson Dowler 1-0 for the first win of the dual for the Trojans.

Sidhu gained a 13-7 victory over Iowa Central's Jordan Hill in the final match of the evening.

NIACC is now idle until after the holiday break. The Trojans return to action Jan. 6 in a dual at RCTC.

Parks and Rec offers youth basketball leagues

The Mason City Recreation Department is offering several youth basketball leagues this winter: Co-ed Tiny Tot (4-year-olds) on Tuesday nights; xo-ed 5-year-olds and kindergarteners, boys and girls 1st and 2nd grades; boys and girls 3rd and 4th grades and boys and girls; 5th and 6th grades. 

The third- fourth-grade and fifth and sixth-grade league teams will be formed by a coaches draft.

All practices will be during the week at the coach’s convenience @ the Salvation Army, Harding or Roosevelt Schools or the YMCA (Monday – Thursday). Games will be on Saturday at Salvation Army or the YMCA. Registration Deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 13. Cost is $35, which includes T-shirt.

Registrations after Dec. 13 will be accepted with a late fee of $6/$10 and random placement on teams. Players that participated in the Fall YMCA Program will receive a $10 discount.

Play begins Saturday, Jan. 6, and will run through February or March depending on weather and the number of teams. Coaches are needed. The draft will be held on Thursday, Dec. 21.

A coaches meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

NICS sweeps Ames

The North Iowa Christian School picked up a pair of wins Tuesday against Ames Vision.

The girls team won 26-22. Kaitlin Davis had 12 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals while Tiegan Barkema finished with 12 points, 3 steals and 3 blocks.

On the boys' side, NICS beat Ames Vision 63-41. Allen Alexander had 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Brian VandenBerg recorded a triple double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

TUESDAY PREP WRESTLING

Tripoli 39, Rockford 24

TRIPOLI | The Warriors won four matches on Tuesday. Trevor Johnson (152), Zachary Walker (160), and Gavin Reicks (145) picked up victories by fall.

Hampton-Dumont 54, Rockford 17

TRIPOLI | The Bulldogs won 10 matches Tuesday against the Warriors. Rockford's Trevor Johnson (152) and Gavin Reicks (145) both won by fall.
