MASON CITY | The Mason City boys golf team has been putting together some solid rounds of late, but on Tuesday, Mohawks coach Jim Cornick was concerned that his team might take a step backwards in a nine-hole meet at Highland Park Golf Course.
“We shot 319 at Otter Creek and 328 at Veenker,” Cornick said of the Mohawks last two meets in Ankeny and Ames, respectively.
Cornick’s fears were unfounded as Mason City’s final group — J.J. Wickman and Bradley Vaith — came in with rounds of 35 and 39 to put the cap on a team score of 154 in a big Mason City win.
The Mohawks downed Fort Dodge 154-182.
“We are staying pretty even,” Cornick said. “We have been taking doubles and triples out of the lineup.”
Evan Lynch and Dylan Pederson added rounds of 40 for Mason City.
The meet is the second in what is a busy week for the Mohawks as they are slated to travel to Des Moines today and Marshalltown on Friday.
Mason City played at Ames on Monday.
“This is a big stretch,” Cornick said. “We need to keep preaching course management. Fairways, greens and two putts.”
The Mohawks final home meet of the season is slated for Sept. 19.
The Mason City junior varsity, paced by Luke Berding’s round of 47, recorded a 201-235 win.
Ben Swegle carded a 49, Brandon Reich a 50 and Justin Rowe a 55.
