LAKE MILLS | Lake Mills crowned four sectional champions and advanced five additional wrestlers to districts as the Bulldogs earned the team title in Class 1A sectional wrestling at Lake Mills on Saturday.
“I would have liked to advance double figures,” Bulldogs coach Alex Brandenburg said. “But it went about as I expected.”
Lake Mills got sectional titles from Jack Ramaker (106), Tyler Helgeson (120), Kyle Beery (138) and Gabe Irons (195). All four recorded falls in their respective championship matches.
Also for the Bulldogs, Caiden Jones was second at 113, Casey Hanson took second at 132, Drae Love was second at 152, Elijah Wagner brough home second at 160, and Max Johnson was second at 220.
Eagle Grove made a spirited run and wound up with four champions and seven advancing in a second-place finish.
Newman Catholic finished with three champions, Jacob McBride at 126, Kam Black at 145 and Chase McCleish at 170.
“I was hoping we would have someone step up and be that special kid today,” Knights coach Mark Bertsch said. “But we can’t complain. We had three champions.”
McCleish, who advanced out of the semifinals with a pin, had a spirited final against Eagle Grove senior Brayden Lyman, and prevailed by a slim 1-0 margin.
“At the beginning of the week, said don’t worry about the meet, worry about the first match.” McCleish said. “It feels good.”
Tate Hagen (160) picked up a title for West Hancock while Belmond-Klemme finished with a pair of champions, Tucker Kroeze at 182 and Cameron Berminio at 285.
The Eagles advance four on the strength of three runners-up while the Broncos send three to districts.
