Base hit

NIACC's Janae Annetts get a high-five from assistant coach Bob Horner after Annetts got a hit during a game in 2015. Horner was hired as the Mason City head softball coach Tuesday.

MASON CITY — Hall of Fame basketball coach Bob Horner is back at Mason City High School.

Horner will take over as head coach of the Mason City softball team this summer, replacing Ashley Stout, who stepped down at the conclusion of last season.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity to coach again at a place I hold so dear to my heart,” Horner said in a release.

Horner coached the Mason City boys basketball team for 17 years, leading the Mohawks to back-to-back state titles in 1996 and 1997. He also coached the baseball team for four years in the early 1990s and was the head softball coach for two years prior to his retirement in 2006.

For the past two years, Horner served as an assistant softball coach at NIACC.
