Mason City's Johnson grabs podium finish at state
IOWA CITY | It turned out to be a great day at the boys state swimming meet for Mason City on Saturday.
The Mohawks' Derek Johnson grabbed a podium finish with a seventh-place showing in the 100 breaststroke in 59.81 seconds. He's the fourth Mohawk ever to break 1 minute in the race, and it was a 0.48 second time cut off his lifetime best.
As a team, Mason City took home 20th place, which is its highest finish since 2008.
Also for the Mohawks, the 200 medley relay team placed 13th in a season's best time of 1:39.22, Nick Litterer brought home 14th in the 100 backstroke in 53.62, the 400 freestyle relay team was 18th in 3:19.81, and Johnson added a 19th-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 48.44.
Ames edged out West Des Moines Valley for the team title, 221-220.
NIACC picks up 800th win in program history
KEOKUK | The No. 15 NIACC women's basketball team stopped Southeastern CC 98-94 in an ICCAC contest Saturday afternoon.
The win for the Lady Trojans was the program's 800th all-time win. The school, which started women's basketball in the 1973-74 season, has an all-time record of 800-537.
NIACC, which is in its 45th season of women's basketball, has averaged more than 17 wins in each of its first 45 seasons of women's basketball.
NIACC (19-5 overall, 6-2 in the ICCAC) trailed 71-69 after three quarters 29-23 to complete the regular-season sweep of Southeastern.
St. Ansgar 59, Lake Mills 55
ST. ANSGAR | Jadyn Anderson led the Saints with 22 points — including 11 of 15 shooing from the free throw line — in Saturday's Class 2A regional tourney game.
The Bulldogs led 31-21 at halftime and 44-37 at the end of the third quarter. The Saints put the game away with a 22-11 run through the fourth quarter.
Anderson also had 10 rebounds. Elizabeth Jenkins had 15 points.
Lake Mills' Laura Knudtson finished with a game-high 23 points.
North Iowa 66, CAL 10
The North Iowa Bison rolled over Coulter-Alexander-Latimer with a 66-10 victory Saturday in Class 1A regionals action.. Junior Katelin Adams led the charge, going 12 for 17 from the field and adding three from the line for 27 points.
Senior Rebekah Jensvold and sophomore Danessa Bruner each added nine points.
The Bison will travel to West Hancock for their next game on Tuesday.
Forest City 58, CGD 43
Seniors Hannah Anderson and Becca Seglem were on fire in the Forest City vs. Clarion-Goldfiend-Dows matchup.
The Indians came out on top 58-43 with Anderson leading the way going 6 for 14 from the field, including two 3-pointers for 18 points. Seglem put on a 6-for-8 performance for 12 points while adding four rebounds.
“Clarion is a really athletic team,” head coach Dusty Meyn said. “Hannah Anderson handled the ball well for us. The biggest difference was Becca Seglem, she played a really good game coming off the bench and just proud of her effort tonight.”
West Fork 53, Belmond-Klemme 13
Junior Rachel Jones led the Warhawks with a double-double performance, racking up 18 points and 16 rebounds. Senior Jacqlyn Caspers added 13 points.
Junior Allison Noland and freshman Addison McMurray each added five points for the Broncos
