Girls tennis

WAVERLY – The Clear Lake posted a 3-1 record for second place in a quadrangular meet at Waverly on Thursday.

Matches pitted two singles players and two doubles teams in a round-robin format.

The Lions fell to host Waverly-Shell Rock 3-1 and downed Waterloo East 4-0 and Aplington-Parkersburg 3-1.

W-SR was 4-0 on the evening to take the team title.

Chloe Mueller finished a perfect 3-0 on the night while playing in the no. 1 singles spot for Clear Lake.

Gretchen Jones and Kiersten Baalson came up with a big win at no. 1 doubles as they claimed a 9-8 (7-2) win to secure Clear Lake’s team victory over A-P.

The Lions, who have now played on three consecutive nights, are off until Monday when they travel to Webster City.

Boys tennis

Mason City 5, Waverly-Shell Rock 4

MASON CITY – The Mason City boys tennis team took on a Waverly-Shell Rock team that was undefeated and had not lost a singles match all season.

Until Thursday.

The Mohawks, who entered the match with a robust 8-1 record themselves, split six singles matches with the Gohawks before handing W-SR its first loss of the season 5-4.

“They will be one of the better teams in Class 1A,” Mason City coach Pat Kruger said. “Our 1 and 2 doubles played great.”

Josh VandenBerg, who also won at no. 1 singles, teamed with Nicholas Matthews for a 6-1, 6-2 win at no. 1 doubles while Brian VandenBerg and Josh Hansen posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at no. 2 doubles.

The Mohawks could have had a greater margin but dropped to singles matches in tiebreakers.

Mason City (9-1) returns to the court to host Ankeny Centennial on Monday before district competition on Thursday.

Girls Soccer

Clear Lake 2, Humboldt 1

HUMBOLDT — Clear Lake overcame a slow start Thursday to score a 2-1 victory over Humboldt.

After falling in a 1-0 hole at halftime, Clear Lake scored twice in the second half to secure the win. Jessica Faber and Mallory Leisure tallied a goal apiece for the Lions and Sara Faber and Julia Merfeld each had an assist.

“We hadn’t played for more than 10 days just because of weather and we just had to get the rust off,” Clear Lake coach Steve Faber said. “We came back and just kept fighting.”

Clear Lake (3-3) travels to GHV Tuesday.

Girls track

WEST DES MOINES – The Mason City girls track team landed six top-four finishes in the CIML Conference meet on West Des Moines Dowling on Thursday.

West Des Moines Dowling totaled 194 points to win the team title while the Mohawks were sixth with 42 points.

“We knew the kids had some tired legs, but they ran really, really well,” Mason City coach Jim Lee said. Dowling, Johnston and Urbandale are among the top teams in the state.”

Mason City had three runner-up finishes on the day.

Piper Watson took second in the high jump with a leap of 5-foot-2 while Hannah Thomas was second in the long jump at 14-10.

The Mohawks’ distance medley relay of Odeleine Daugherty, Hannah Faktor, Thomas and Emma Davison also brought in a runner-up finish with a time of 4:32.92.

Davison also had a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 in 5:10.18 while the shuttle hurdle relay team of Erika Mariner, Skyler Johnson, Hailee Sgontz and Thomas also finished fourth in 1:14.14.

The Mason City 4x400 relay team featuring Serena Trousdale, Anna Dietz Maddie Burton and Thomas posted a 4:32.59 time which was also good for fourth.

The Mohawks return to competition on May 11 when they will compete in districts.

“We need to get everybody rested up and we will see what happens,” Lee said.
