NIACC’s Sheppard, Pena sixth at Coe Invite

CEDAR RAPIDS — NIACC’s Sedrak Sheppard and Mario Pena each finished sixth at the Coe College Invitational on Saturday.

Sheppard placed sixth at 197 pounds for the Trojans, earning a pair of wins in the consolation bracket after falling in the quarterfinals. Sheppard fell in his fifth-place match against Grand View’s Steven Gregory 11-6.

Meanwhile, Pena – wrestling at 285 pounds – also picked up a pair of consolation wins following a 3-1 loss to Simpson’s Colby Vlieger in the quarterfinals. Pena was defeated 3-1 by Cornell College’s Chris Lyons in his fifth-place match in overtime.

“We got to see how we’re going to compete against good wrestlers,” NIACC coach Steve Kelly said. “I thought we competed hard and that’s what you want to see at these tournaments against bigger schools.”

Mohawk Hockey Club 3, Des Moines Oak Leafs 2 (SO)

DES MOINES — The Mohawk Hockey Club came away with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Des Moines Oak Leafs in Midwest High School Hockey League Central Division action on Saturday.

Nate Lassise pushed home the game-winning goal, one of three Mohawks to score in the shootout.

Jacob Lang started the scoring for the Mohawks (3-4-0-0), lighting the lamp 2 minutes, 5 seconds into the second period.

The Mohawks’ lead help up until the third period as Ryan Greenough and Seth Harpenau gave the Oak Leafs a 2-1 lead with 10:01 to play.

However, Butler added the equalizer with 23 seconds remaining in regulation for the Mohawks while Derek Walker gained the win in goal, stopping 30 shots.

Butler and J.J. Hahn added shootout goals for the Mohawks, who travel to Ames on Wednesday.
