MASON CITY — With not much more for error in the Midwest High School Hockey League this season, the Mohawk Hockey Club knows every win counts.

On Friday night, the Mohawks grabbed their 17th victory of the season with a 7-1 win over Ames on senior night.

“We might be starting to peak at the right time,” Mohawk Hockey Club co-coach John Lloyd said. “If we play good hockey and smart hockey … we’ll hopefully be ready to play at the state tournament.”

Tirrell Hopkins kicked off the scoring in the first period for the Mohawks with a goal on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line. It started a period which was heavy on the offense on the Mohawks’ end.

Nate Lassise added a goal on an odd-man rush at the 8:58 mark on a nice pass from fellow senior Zach Jimenez. Senior Speed Toyne scored shortly after to send the Mohawks into the second period with a 3-0 lead.

Mohawk senior Bryce Butler added to that lead with a goal of his own 10:53 into the second before Ames got on the board with a goal by Aaron Seydell. Jaack Phillps scored with under two minutes to play in the period and the Mohawks held a 5-1 lead after 2.

Jaxon Jones got one of his own in the third period when he recorded a goal  on a shot from the blue line 42 seconds into the period on a power play. Butler added his second goal of the contest with 9:29 to play to send the Mohawks on to the six-goal victory.

Josh Thilges stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced in goal for the Mohawks, who play at the Des Moines Oak Leafs Saturday night.
