MARSHALLTOWN — After Day 1 of the Class 1A state golf tournament at American Legion Memorial Golf Course, Bishop Garrigan is knocking on the door of a state title as the Golden Bears sit in second place.

But in order to do so, Garrigan will need a lot to happen in Saturday’s final round as its 318 is 10 strokes back of leader East Buchannon.

Logan Capesius led the Golden Bears with a round of 74, which has him in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings.

Newman Catholic’s Austin Eckenrod is right there with Capesius after shooting a 74 of his own.

Winfield-Mt. Union’s Kaleb Hagge is the Day 1 leader with a 68.

For Garrigan, Donovan Berte is tied for 10th after shooting a round of 77, Andrew Arndorfer is tied for 16th with an 81, Tommy Kollasch is tied for 25th after an 86, James Burns shot 90 as in a tie for 34th and Andrew Thilges is tied for 45th after a 94.

The tournament concludes Saturday in Marshalltown.
