MARSHALLTOWN — Emily Snelling and Thomas Storbeck had one more state title to add to their resumes Tuesday at the Class 1A coed state golf tournament at American Legion Memorial Golf Course.
The senior duo from Clear Lake shot 72 to bring home Clear Lake’s first coed title since Snelling and Waldron won it in 2015. It’s the fifth time in the past eight years Clear Lake has claimed the title.
“Doing a coed is a little bit different format than their used to, but those two, their just diehard golfers,” Clear Lake girls golf coach Adam Brinkman said. “They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses so well and they were able to work together around the greens and made some good putts.”
Snelling and Storbeck cleared Garner-Hayfield-Ventura’s Bailee Frayne and Matthew Heinemann, who finished as runner-up, by two strokes in the alternate stroke format.
GHV’s Carlee Frayne and Grady Umbarger tied for 16th with an 81, Clear Lake’s Ashley DeLong and Tate Storbeck tied for 29th with an 86, Newman Catholic’s Peyton Olson and Austin Eckenrod finished 33rd with an 89, and Newman’s Morgan Luecht and Jase Curley were 49th with a 100.
In Class 2A, Mason City’s Thea Lunning and J.J. Wickman shot 91 to finish in a tie for 31st.
