MARSHALTOWN — The task was a tough one for the Bishop Garrigan boys golf team heading into Saturday’s final round of the Class 1A state tournament at American Legion Memorial golf Course with 10 strokes to make up in order to catch the leader.

The Golden Bears made their best attempt at it but still wound up on the short end as they finished as the 1A runner-up behind East Buchannon. Garrigan shot 632 (318-314) while East Buchannon won with a 614 (308-306).

Logan Capesius led the Golden Bears with a two-day total of 148 (74-74), which netted him a medal after tying for fifth place.

Newman Catholic’s Austin Eckenrod came in just behind Capesius with a round of 149 (74-75), which placed him seventh overall to secure a medal.

After Capesius, Donovan Berte turned in a top-10 performance for the Golden Bears as he tied for ninth with a 154 (77-77). Andrew Arndorfer added a 161 (81-80) and Tommy Kollasch rounded out the scoring with a 169 (86-83), which netted him 33rd.

Also for the Golden Bears, James Burns shot 175 (90-85) and Andrew Thilges finished with a 179 (94-85).
