Van Meter 24, Belmond-Klemme 6

VAN METER — All week the narrative surrounding the Belmond-Klemme football team was it knew it could play better than it did in a 39-0 loss to South Winneshiek last Friday. It had to start on defense, though.

The Broncos defense came to play in Friday’s Class 1A playoff opener at No. 2 Van Meter, but the offense had trouble breaking the Bulldogs’ defense in a 24-6 loss.

Van Meter took a 17-0 lead into the final quarter before B-K scored in the fourth.

Carson Rhodes led the Bulldogs (10-0) with 247 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 37 carries.

Belmond-Klemme finished its season with a 7-3 record.

Tripoli 28, Riceville 18

RICEVILLE — This was a prime opportunity for some revenge for the Riceville football team.

Welcoming a Tripoli team which handed the Wildcats their lone loss in the first week of the season, Riceville had a chance to get one back in the opening round of the 8-man playoffs Friday. Unfortunately for them, a tough first half spelled doom in a 28-18 loss.

Tripoli jumped to a 28-6 lead at halftime, and a second-half rally fell short for the Wildcats in the 10-point defeat.

Marquise Paino paced the Tripoli offense with 146 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Alex nation added the other score on a fumble recovery.

Riceville finished its season with an 8-2 overall record.
