TUESDAY ROUNDUP

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Osage 55, Newman Catholic 51

OSAGE | The fifth-rated (3A) Osage girls basketball team ran into one of its stiffest opponents of the year as a scrappy Newman Catholic took the Green Devils to the brink before Osage prevailed 55-51 on Tuesday.

The Green Devils looked to be putting together a comfortable margin heading to the fourth as they had edged out to a six-point lead, but the Newman defense created several turnovers down the stretch to remain close.

“Give Newman credit, they played hard,” Osage coach Chad Erickson said. “It played a big part in how we played.”

Gabby Schwarting came up big for Osage as the senior finished with 18 points — including four 3-point baskets — and 5 rebounds.

Mia Knudsen added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

“We did everything we wanted to do,” Knights coach Mike Schutt said. “They’re a very good team. They’re rated highly for a reason.”

Peyton Olson led Newman with 21 points. Maria Determan had 5 points and 7 assists. Paige Walker pulled down 10 rebounds.

Osage (12-0) faces a key Top of Iowa Conference East Division test on Friday when it travels to Central Springs to face the one-loss Panthers.

The Panthers’ lone loss on the season is a 43-34 decision at Osage on Dec. 1.

Newman (7-6) returns home to face North Butler on Friday.
