Waverly-Shell Rock 55, Charles City 43
DENVER – Charles City and Waverly-Shell Rock split a pair of regular season games in boys basketball this season, so the rubber match on Monday not only would give the winner an edge in the season series, it would mean one of the two teams would advance out of Class 3A substate play and claim a spot in the state tournament.
The Go-Hawks turned up the defensive pressure and came away with a 55-43 victory to end the Comets’ season at 18-5.
Charles City averaged 61 points per game in the two previous meetings.
“Our kids battled but it just wasn’t our night,” Charles City coach Ben Klapperich said. “We had some open, clean looks that we just couldn’t get to fall.”
W-SR moves on to the state tournament with an 18-6 overall mark.
Aplington-Parkersburg 65, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 60
CHARLES CITY – After trailing by 20, the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys basketball team put together a 23-6 run in the fourth quarter but could not complete the comeback as the Cardinals fell 65-60 to Aplington-Parkersburg in Class 2A substate boys basketball on Monday.
The Cardinals, a state qualifier a season ago, finished the season with a 20-5 record.
A-P (23-1) moves on to the Class 2A state tournament in Des Moines.
