MASON CITY — With three games left in the season to lock up another division title, the North Iowa Bulls wanted to make sure they took care of business right away. It came at the perfect time with the second-place team La Crosse in town for a two-game series.

The Bulls bullied their way to a 7-2 victory Friday night at the North Iowa Ice Arena to win their sixth straight division crown. North Iowa goalie Colin Cain also broke the franchise’s wins record in goal.

The Bulls, who have made a hobby of this kind of thing, still made time to celebrate the milestone afterward.

“It was rowdy. It’s always fun for a win, but this one was special tonight,” North Iowa forward Dan Sandvig said.

It was a busy first period that got things started for North Iowa.

The Bulls piled up four goals in the opening 20 minutes by four different players – Mitch Dolter, Jake Joyaux, Tyler Bump and Sandvig – to take a 4-0 lead after one.

Sandvig tallied his second of the contest 8:37 into the second, and Matt Dahlseide added one of his own to give the Bulls a commanding 6-0 lead after two periods.

Cain lost his shutout 2:05 into the third when La Crosse got on the board with their first goal, and the Freeze added one more seven minutes later. Dahlseide added one more for the Bulls for good measure to give them the five-goal victory.

Cain stopped 27 of the 29 shots on goal he faced.

The Bulls and Freeze are back in action Saturday night in Mason City at 7:30 p.m.
