North Iowa native Ralph Bovard, MD, will sign copies of his book, "Gilly and the Snowcats," from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Clear Lake Arts Center.
Bovard is a 1971 graduate of Mason City High School. He has dedicated his book to his mother, the late Eugenia Bovard. His dad, retired District Court Judge Gilbert K. Bovard lives in Clear Lake.
The coming-of-age story is about a 12-year-old girl who enters Alaska’s famed Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race with a team of cats. It is inspired by Freda, a Swedish goddess who traveled in a chariot pulled by felines.
“I’ve always been a closet writer,” said Bovard, who entered St. Olaf College as a pre-med student but graduated with a degree in literature. “And I’ve always been drawn to writers who were also doctors.”
