The Veterans Memorial in Clear Lake seems to be having a problem finding a home.
My thoughts on this are:
1. Put the memorial between the Sea Wall and the Lakeview Room. I can't think of a better spot.
2. The proposal to locate the memorial on the corner of Eighth and Main doesn't work. We shouldn't destroy the most beautiful flower bed in North Iowa, one that is sponsored and nurtured by the Clear Lake Bank & Trust and Gene Madson.
The Memorial Association (VFW), headed by Chris Beard, has a load to carry. He replaces "Old Glory -- Carrie Heitland, my second mother. She lived her live for Memorial Day, Veterans Day and for all veterans.
The VFW, with the help of the Boy Scouts, puts up 100 flags for the Avenue of Flags and nearly 800 crosses that have deceased veterans' name on them in the cemetery, all to be viewed only for the Memorial Day weekend.
We have run out of storage room for the small crosses. Rather than continuing with the crosses at the cemetery, we could use the new memorial space to display the names of all deceased veterans from Clear Lake (or who had a Clear Lake connection) and Ventura.
Using the memorial in this way would eliminate the need for the cemetery's storage building. It could be removed to make room for more gravesites -- a win-win situation for the city and the Memorial Association.
Please join me in urging the Parks and Rec Board, the City Council and the advisory board to locate the memorial in the most beautiful, logical spot for it -- by the lakefront.
Proud to have served in World War II and Korea.
