I'm a senior citizen and live in Mason City, and it's great Mason City is going for more healthy living in the form of Blue Zones.
The state, city and county need more no-smoking laws. You can't smoke now in restaurants, public places, stores, malls ... but we need to go one step further: We need to go no-smoking in apartment complexes. There's talk of this, I'm told, but action needs to be taken. Some new complexes are now no-smoking.
No, I'm not picking on smokers, but it's a very addictive habit and a real health issue. No one knows until they have respiratory problems (asthma) of no fault of their own. Treating this is very expensive and not fun to deal with.
Moving to get away from your neighbor who smokes is not a fix. It's expensive to move, and why? Should a person move to protect their health? Now whose rights are being affected?
There are programs to help smokers and it's not easy to quit, but it can be done. Smoking costs a lot.
I wish all young people start could see the long-term effects.
