MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin | The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., parent company of Younkers, announced Wednesday it will close 42 stores this year, two of which are in Iowa.
Younkers stores at College Square Mall, Cedar Falls, and Westdale Mall, Cedar Rapids, are on the closure list. Mason City's store will remain open.
One store in Minnesota — Herberger's Clearance Center in Birch Run Station in Maplewood — will also close.
Store closing sales will begin Feb. 1 and run for 10 to 12 weeks, the company said in a news release. Associates will be able to interview for positions at other store locations.
Bon-Ton President/CEO Bill Tracy said the closures are part of a "comprehensive turnaround plan" the company began in November.
"We remain focused on executing our key initiatives to drive improved performance in an effort to strengthen our capital structure to support the business going forward," Tracy said in a statement.
The company operates 260 stores in 24 states under the Bon-Ton, Bergner's, Boston Store, Carson's Elder-Beerman, Herberger's and Younkers nameplates, selling clothing, accessories, cosmetics and home furnishings.
