MASON CITY | Wednesday is the deadline for residents to pay the first half assessment for assessment year 2014 real estate taxes and assessment year 2016 mobile home taxes.

Cerro Gordo County Treasurer Patricia Wright said it is also the deadline on the final extension for elderly or disabled residents to return their Iowa Property Tax Credit forms.

Taxes not received in the treasurer's office by Sept. 30 must be postmarked by Sept. 30 to avoid a penalty, she said.

Wright recommends taxpayers sending their first-half coupon along with their check. Payment methods accepted in the office are cash, check and debit card, Discover, MasterCard and Visa.

Regarding the tax credits, taxpayers at least 65 years old as of Dec. 31, 2014, or 18 years old and totally disabled as of Dec. 31, 2014, may qualify for the tax credit if their income from all sources is below $22,011 for calendar year 2014.

Individuals 23 or older who own a mobile home qualify for a reduction if their income is below $22,011.

Property tax credit forms are available at the treasurer's office, on the county website at and on the websites of the state treasurer and the Iowa Department of Revenue.

The treasurer's office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Anyone seeking further information is asked to contact the treasurer's office at 641-421-3127 or by email at
