MASON CITY — More than 125 cyclists competed during the first day of the inaugural Cannonball Cross in East Park Saturday.
Cyclocross racers complete laps, rain or shine, on a twisting course with barriers and varying terrain.
When racers encounter barriers, like a log or railroad tie on the course, they will hop off and on their bike. On hills, sand pits and muddy sections that cannot be ridden quickly, cyclists will shoulder their bike and run with it.
Hosted by North Iowa Spin, Cannonball Cross is a spectator-friendly event. Racing resumes at 10 a.m. Sunday, running until about 4:30 p.m.
Each day of racing includes 19 different category events, finishing with elite men and women.
