MASON CITY — Parker’s Woods, Mason City, won new playground equipment through Playworld Systems’ “Write to Play” contest.
The park was named one of two winners on Wednesday after several weeks of online voting.
“I am so happy,” said Sarah Swegle of Mason City, who has been leading the effort for new playground equipment. “I am just thrilled that so many people voted for us not only here but across the nation.”
Swegle, the mother of children ages 12, 10 and 8, has been raising money for new Parker’s Woods playground equipment the past couple of years. Her goal has been to install two sets of equipment — one for ages 5 to 12 later this year and another for ages 2 to 5 next year. The equipment won on Wednesday is for the latter.
“Now we can install both playsets this year,” she said.
Swegle said Playworld Systems told her the equipment is ready to ship now, but must first go to a dealer in Kansas City. She isn’t sure what the dealer’s schedule is like, but ideally both sets would be installed later this year.
About $92,000 is available for the other playground equipment. Swegle said bids should be finalized the first part of August, and then she hopes everything can be installed in September.
“My goal is before the snow flies this year,” she said.
The project is also suppose to receive additional funding in 2014, which Swegle said will now probably be used for accessories or upgrades to the ground surface.
“We’re really excited,” she said. “I feel like we’re taking a park that was forgotten and turning it into fun and family.”
In a similar contest, North Iowans can still vote for Mason City in PetSafe’s “Bark for you Park” contest through July 26.
PetSafe is offering $100,000 to the winner for the building of a dog park and will give four $25,000 prizes as well.
Voting can be done on the PetSafe web page, www.petsafe.net or on the PetSafe Facebook page.
The winner will be announced on July 31.
