Virginia M. Schmitz

MASON CITY | Virginia M. Schmitz, 98, of Mason City formerly of Swaledale and Thornton, died Thursday (December 28, 2017) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City surrounded by her family and special friend, Sherry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Tuesday (January 2, 2018) at Epiphany Parish-Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 N. Adams Ave, Mason City with Reverend Austin Wilkers officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Virginia M. Schmitz was born on September 17, 1919, the daughter of Archie and Leta (Graham) Miller in Aredale, Iowa.

She attended Rockwell schools before working odd jobs, including the local hemp plant, and the creamery in Mason City.

Virginia married Dale Schmitz on July 13, 1945 and to this union, two sons were born, Joe and Dennis.

She loved gardening, animals and playing cards. Virginia was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Swaledale until its closing, after which she joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell.

Virginia was a member of a local coffee group after moving to Thornton and attended a bible study.

Those left to cherish her memory is her son, Dennis (Gwen) Schmitz, Mason City; her grandchildren, Laura (Mike) Schilling, Michael Schmitz, Dale (April) Schmitz, Pat Schmitz, and Heather Schmitz; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; her sisters-in-law, Lois Ruchotzke and Ardith Mellott; and a very special friend, Sherry Schaefer, Thornton.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Leta (Graham) Miller, her husband, Dale Schmitz, her son Joe (Carol) Schmitz, a brother, Virgil Miller, and one great-grandson.
