Gloria Virginia Floy was born on July 7, 1924 to Fred and Viola (Johnson) Floy in rural Thornton, Iowa. Gloria graduated from Swaledale High School and was the valedictorian of her Senior class in 1941. She was very proud of her high school diploma and valued education. She married Harold Martin on September 11, 1944, together they raised 9 children. Gloria helped Harold create a true American farm family: raising cattle, hogs, chickens, growing field crops and of course a very large garden. Knitting was also a favorite pastime and a necessity; she knitted many mittens and slippers.
She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford, Iowa serving as: Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Kitchen Chairman, WELCA and Guild. Gloria also sold Avon and Stanley products. She loved learning and took many classes in ceramics, cake decorating, basket weaving, flower arranging. She was able to take night classes at NIACC in accounting in order to be able to help Harold on the farm paperwork. Gloria owned and operated Country Corner Ceramics, operating her own kiln and teaching ceramic classes on the farm. For many years she worked as a night shift aide at Gerard's which is now Four Oaks. Gloria was also a Den Mother and Cub Scout Leader in Rockford. She was a foster parent for many years and welcomed nieces and nephews to the farm during the summertime: she opened her home and heart.
Gloria is survived by her children, Bob (Pat) Martin of Rockwell, Irene Martin of Rockford, John (Donna) Martin of Mason City, Paul (Diane) Martin of Rockford, Deb Martin of Nora Springs, Nancy (Denny) Umphress of Mason City, Wayne Martin of Rockwell, and Christy Martin of Charles City; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; her sister Carol (Harold) Pueggel of Garner; sister-in-law Irene Floy of Decorah; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
