SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Dorothy “Babe” McCaulley, age 93, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls.
Funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Family will be present to greet friends for visitation beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Dorothy “Babe” was born on August 1, 1919, in Eldora, Iowa, to Jakob Gaubatz and Dorothea Schwalm Gaubatz as the youngest of 10 children. She loved to recall her adventures growing up on a farm near Steamboat Rock, Iowa, and her dancing days in her teens at the The Surf in Clear Lake, Iowa.
She moved to Mason City, Iowa, in 1941. She met Richard “Dick” McCaulley in 1945 while running the elevator at Mercy Hospital, and they were married on December 13, 1946. Dick and Dorothy moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with their sons in 1959 to the house where Dorothy lived until April of this year.
After Dick’s death in 1973, she was employed at Fantles Café and Sioux Valley Hospital before retiring in 1979.
One of her favorite pastimes was reading the Bible and she spoke often of her faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. In her life’s journey she enjoyed spending time with her family, visiting with friends and neighbors, bowling, shopping and collecting bird figurines. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Stephen (Ingrid) McCaulley of Sioux Falls; step-son, Gary (Vivian) McCaulley of Wellington, Kan.; daughter-in-law, Mary McCaulley of Spicer, Minn.; grandchildren, Matthew (Heather) McCaulley, Andrew (Stephanie) McCaulley, Philip (Jill) McCaulley, Sarah McCaulley, Tammi (Randy Perry) McCaulley, and Michael (Rebecca) McCaulley; 17 great- grandchildren and many dear relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Richard McCaulley; son, Daniel McCaulley; great granddaughter, Samantha McCaulley; her parents and nine brothers and sisters.
