NORTHWOOD | The Northwood man charged with the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend is asking for a change of venue.

Tyrone Washington, 39, is accused of first-degree murder in the Aug. 5 death of Justina Smith, 30, also of Northwood. Smith was found at Swensrud Park in Northwood.

A motion was filed Oct. 4 asking that the trial be moved out of Worth County. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 28 in Worth County District Court.

His trial is scheduled for Oct. 30 but Washington has requested a continuance.

A hearing is also pending on Washington's request for a new attorney. He is presently represented by public defender Susan Flander.

Washington remains in the Worth County Jail under $500,000 cash-only bond.

If convicted, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
