MASON CITY | A free cancer retreat organized by Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa and Cops Against Cancer will be held next month.
The retreat, "There is a Positive Life After Cancer," will be in the East Campus Auditorium at Mercy, above the first floor of the Cancer Center. It is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.
Those who attend will receive information and resources on how to live after a cancer diagnosis. Breakfast, lunch and other refreshments will also be served.
Cops Against Cancer has been focused on providing free cancer retreats primarily to those in the Des Moines metro area for the past three years. Additional funding this past year has allowed the organization to expand its reach.
The organization's founders, Craig and Shirley Phinney, created the nonprofit after Craig was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer in 2010. Phinney, who has worked in law enforcement for 35 years, extends the "protect and serve" motto to cancer patients and their families.
