MASON CITY | A man accused of taking a baby from its mother at a Clear Lake bar has been sentenced to prison.
Jonathan L. Workman, 34, Belmond, was sentenced Monday in Cerro Gordo County District Court to 10 years in prison.
Workman entered an Alford plea in August to one count of child stealing, a Class C felony. In an Alford plea, a defendant doesn't admit the crime but does acknowledge prosecutors can likely prove the charge.
Two related charges were dismissed.
According to Clear Lake police, surveillance video captured images of Workman trying to take a 6-month-old from Rumorz bar in Clear Lake on April 20.
The baby's mother worked at the bar. She was not working that day and stopped to see co-workers, use the restroom and change the baby's diaper.
Police said Workman grabbed the baby but bar patrons blocked his way. He eventually handed the child back to its mother.
