DES MOINES — Michael Wiser has been appointed Des Moines Bureau chief for the Lee Enterprises Iowa newspapers including the Globe Gazette.

Wiser has been with the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star since 2000 as a reporter and for the past three years also has supervised reporters as a desk editor on Sundays and during swing shifts.

He has won numerous awards for his reporting on education, public safety and municipal issues. He also worked for the Galesburg (Ill.) Register-Mail from 1998-2000.

Wiser has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in political science from Loyola University of Chicago and a master of arts in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield. At that time, he interned for the Bloomington Pantagraph in the Illinois Capitol under Kurt Erickson, the Lee Illinois Statehouse Bureau chief.

The Des Moines Bureau covers the Iowa Legislature and politics, among other areas.

Lee Enterprise stock has fallen by 90% in 5 years. Employment there would be like going to work for Enron after the company began its death spiral.
