CLEAR LAKE | Clear Lake Police Lt. Rex McChesney was appointed interim police chief by the Clear Lake City Council Monday night.

Police Chief Greg Peterson, 63, has announced his retirement effective April 30. McChesney will be formally sworn in as interim police chief at the council's March 3 meeting.

McChesney is a lifelong resident of Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1981. He attended NIACC where he received an associates degree.

He began his law enforcement career in 1983 as a correctional officer for the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office. In 1986, he began working for the Clear Lake Police Department and attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 1987.

McChesney worked as a patrol officer for the department until he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2006.

McChesney and his wife, Jodie, live in Clear Lake and have two sons, Seth and Sean.

Peterson has been the police chief in Clear Lake since November 2006.

McChesney will serve as interim chief while the City Council searches for a permanent replacement for Peterson.

I agree with Nick. There is no one better to be the face of the Clear Lake Police Department than Rex.

If the city council does not make him the permanent chief they will have made a huge mistake.

Excellent choice. McChesney is a good man; he's 'no-nonsense' - but with a smile!
