MASON CITY | The Kraft Foods plant in Mason City is laying off 19 employees, effective Monday, Nov. 30.

"We intend this to be temporary," said Joyce Hodel, corporate spokeswoman.

She said Kraft will re-evaluate the employment situation at the Mason City plant sometime during the first quarter, which is from January through March.

Hodel said Kraft adjusts employment at its manufacturing plants from time to time based on changing consumer preferences and the economic environment.

She said the layoffs at the Mason City plant were announced the week on Oct. 21.

The employees who are being laid off will be paid through the Thanksgiving holiday, according to Hodel.

Kraft's net revenues declined 4.2 percent during the third quarter of 2013, according to a report released by the company on Wednesday.

Don't blame Kraft and don't blame Mason City. This is a sign of the national economy which is not improving as much as many would like.
